It’s easy to get your fire started with good kindling wood. Ideally kindling is a softwood, about as thick as 1-4 pencils, and filled with resin to catch fire quickly.

One of the best ready-made forms of kindling is pine cones. They’re pine tree fruit, and carry the seeds for the next crop. However, from a home heating perspective, they’re like little lumps of sunshine, ready to burst into flames and warm up your home.
